Middle East Calling Card

Quagmire: America in the Middle East by Leon T. Hadar, With the disappearance of the Soviet Union middle east calling card and the end of the Cold War, is there any remaining reason for the United States to be a major participant in Middle Eastern politics? Leon Hadar says no in this incisive book, Quagmire: America in the Middle East. Hadar, a former UN bureau chief for the Jerusalem Post who teaches political science at the American University in Washington, writes that it is time to rethink America's decades-old Middle Eastern policy, which was fashioned in the crucible of the Cold War. He challenges the public middle east calling card and policymakers to break out of the mold of obsolete thinking middle east calling card and to take a fresh look at taken-for-granted premises. Quagmire begins by noting that dramatic changes in the old Soviet bloc in 1989 middle east calling card and 1990 had begun to force a reconsideration of America's international role - until Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait. "Foreign policy paradigms die hard", Hadar writes in his preface. "Both Arabs middle east calling card and Israelis middle east calling card and their supporters in Washington were attempting to draw the United States back into active diplomatic middle east calling card and military involvement in the Middle East. Their efforts were seconded by those of frustrated Cold Warriors who hoped that perceived threats emanating from the Middle East would give rise to new calls for military expenditures middle east calling card and intervention". One effect of the Iraqi crisis middle east calling card and ensuing war was to temporarily save the foreign policy establishment from a painful readjustment. Those, including President Bush, who advocated a continued global military role for the United States could point to Iraq to illustrate the threat of "instability" that required an American response. Although other regions, Central Europe, for example, evidenced instability, theMiddle East, with its riches of oil, furnished an apparently unanswerable case for American globalism. Hadar argues that recent developments in the Middle East do not in fact demonstrate a need for American involvement there.

The War for Palestine: Rewriting the History of 1948 by Eugene L. Rogan, By all accounts, the 1948 Palestine war was one of the most significant milestones in the modern history of the Middle East middle east calling card and remains one of the most intractable conflicts of modern times. Israelis call the 1948 war "The War of Independence" while Arabs call it al-Nakba or the disaster. The conventional Israeli version portrays 1948 as an unequal struggle between a Jewish David middle east calling card and an Arab Goliath, as a desperate, heroic, middle east calling card and ultimately successful battle for survival against overwhelming odds. In this version all the surrounding Arab states sent their armies into Palestine to strangle the Jewish state at birth middle east calling card and the Palestinians left the country on orders from their own leaders middle east calling card and in the expectation of a triumphal return. Since the late 1980s, however, a group of "new historians" or revisionist Israeli historians have challenged many of the claims surrounding the birth of the State of Israel middle east calling card and the first Arab-Israeli war. The present volume was conceived as a contribution to the ongoing debate about 1948. The War for Palestine brings together leading Israeli new historians with prominent Arab middle east calling card and Western scholars of the Middle East who revisit 1948 from the perspective of each of the countries involved in the war. The result is a volume that is rich in new material middle east calling card and new insights middle east calling card and which enhances considerably our understanding of the historical roots of the Arab-Israeli conflict. Eugene L. Rogan is a Lecturer in Modern History of the Middle East, Fellow of St. Anthony's College, middle east calling card and Director of the Middle East Centre at the University of Oxford. He is the author of Frontiers of State in the Late Ottoman Empire (Cambridge, 2000) middle east calling card and co-editor of Village, Steppe, middle east calling card and State: theSocial Origins of Modern Jordan (St. Martin's, 1995).
